South swell to last through tomorrow

The weather service extended its high-surf advisory through tomorrow for south-facing shores on all islands.
O'ahu lifeguards downplayed yesterday's waves.
"It wasn't really that big," Rob Miller, a city ocean safety dispatch officer, said yesterday. He said lifeguards did not have any major rescues yesterday.
"We didn't have a lot of problems," Miller said.
"We're expecting it to peak out (today)," he said, adding that "if there are any rescues or assists," it will be today.
The waves came courtesy of a week-old weather system from east of New Zealand, the weather service said yesterday.
Surf surged against the south shore yesterday in 6- to 8-foot sets, with an occasional 10-footer rolling in, said forecaster Bob Burke. The swell was supposed to peak late last night or early this morning, said Burke.
Although the swell will subside a bit after tomorrow, larger-than-normal surf on the south shore is still expected through the end of the week.
"About a week ago there was a low-pressure system to the east of New Zealand that created the swell, and it takes a week to get here," Burke said. "We'll probably still have decent swells at least until about Thursday."
