South swell to begin tapering off

By Peter Boylan

A south swell that treated surfers to 6- to 8-foot waves yesterday is expected to peak today, officials said.

Waves crashed at Kapahulu groin yesterday, but officials say the south swell of recent days is expected to begin abating today.

"It wasn't really that big today," said Rob Miller, a city ocean safety dispatch officer. He said lifeguards did not have any major rescues yesterday.

"We didn't have a lot of problems," Miller said.

"We're expecting it to peak out (today)," he said, adding that "if there are any rescues or assists," it will be today.

The waves came courtesy of a week-old weather system from east of New Zealand, the National Weather Service said yesterday.

Surf surged against the south shore yesterday in 6- to 8-foot sets, with an occasional 10-footer rolling in, said Bob Burke, a National Weather Service forecaster. The swell was supposed to peak late last night or early this morning, said Burke.

Although the swell will subside a bit after today, larger-than-normal surf on the south shore is still expected through the end of the week, Burke said.

"About a week ago there was a low-pressure system to the east of New Zealand that created the swell, and it takes a week to get here," he said. "We'll probably still have decent swells at least until about Thursday."
