$2.9M aids study of papaya sex

The Hawaii Agricultural Research Center has been awarded $2.9 million over four years from the National Science Foundation for its research on sex chromosomes in papayas. Dr. Ray R. Ming will serve as the project's principal investigator.

The sex of papayas can be male, female or hermaphrodite. Papaya farmers want to produce the latter, since they have the best quality and are most productive. The study will examine inherited traits such as the fruit's size, shape and quality.

K-12 programs awarded $5K

HEI Charitable Foundation has awarded $5,000 to Junior Achievement of Hawaii in support of its K-12 education programs on O'ahu, Hawai'i and Maui.

The grant demonstrates HECO's electric utility partnership with Junior Achievement, which aims to educate youths statewide on financial literacy and free enterprise.
