'Lost' star finds sweetness at Chef Mavro

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

SIGHT 'EMS: Dominic Monaghan, a co-star on ABC's "Lost," found his way to George Mavrothalassitis' Chef Mavro, where he enjoyed the six-course tasting menu last week. Monaghan, not usually a dessert fan, loved the grand finale: Hot Chocolate Foam, cumin-roasted pineapple, Hawaiian vanilla sorbet. ...

Skyline, at the Sheraton Waikiki's Hanohano Room, is becoming a mecca for celebrities, what with all those TV shows in production. Those who braved the long lines recently were able to check out Fox's "North Shore" staple Brooke Burns in her dark 'do; dreadlocked Jason Momoa, dancing all night; Nikki DeLoach, ensconced in a booth; and folks like Jay Kenneth Johnson simply chilling out. NBC's "Hawaii" contingent included a dancing Eric Balfour, who also kibitzed with Skyline promoters Flash Hansen and Matty Boy Hazelgrove, and Sharif Atkins, Aya Sumika and Peter Navy Tuiasosopo at the NBC table. ABC's "Lost" rep included Naveen Andrews. Skyline —held the first and third Saturday of each month — should be a destination for star-gazers. ...

The aforementioned Tuiasosopo is a single dad raising five kids. He recently treated his second oldest daughter, Rio, 13, to an Aveda Salon & Spa visit (he also goes in for a massage), where a familiar face was in an opposite chair: former University of Hawai'i president Evan Dobelle. By the way, Tuiasosopo is a fan of southern cooking, so he and his family took in the BBQ Fest now under way at the Ward Avenue Dixie Grill restaurant, promising manager Jennifer Adkins that he'll be a regular diner there. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE:

Honolulu firefighters will receive the "star" treatment at a special screening of "Ladder 49" at 7:30 p.m. today at the Signature Dole Cannery Theatres. Among those expected to attend: Gov. Linda Lingle, Honolulu Fire Chief Attilio Leonardi and Deputy Fire Chief John Clark. A retrospective photo display of the Honolulu Fire Department will be on view as well as antique fire vehicles from the HFD archives. A "premiere" feel will prevail, with lei-giving, hula dancers, music and even a red carpet entrance. The Touchstone film opens Friday and co-stars Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta, though regrettably, neither will be present tonight. ...

Dale DeGroff, director of beverage arts at the Halekulani Hotel and acknowledged as a premier mixologist from his Rainbow Room stint in New York, literally is raising the bar on beverage service. He'll mix drinks at Lewers Lounge from 8 to 10 p.m. tomorrow and again Oct. 27 and 29. ...

That Judi Flowers (Bonjour Fleurette) wholesale shindig at the Ohana East Hotel happens today; we were misinformed last week about when it was being held. ...

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss checked out the seafood at Morton's steakhouse. ...

HERE 'N' THERE: The Army Community Theatre's "The King & I," which opens Nov. 18 at Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter, sounds like a winner. Ray Bumatai will return to the stage (he's bald, so he'll be perfect) as the King and Tina Shelton will be his Anna in the beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein classic. A feather in director Jim Hutchison's cap, on the heels of the sold-out "West Side Story." Tickets are already on sale, so don't miss out. ...

Matt Catingub, Honolulu Symphony pops conductor, is back from Los Angeles, where he did arrangements and production work for a CD, specifically a track for actress Patricia Heaton, Emmy Award-winning co-star of "Everybody Loves Raymond." The track is for a Concord CD by Mary Haskell, pegged for March 2005 release. Catingub also played sax for a Debby Boone CD that will pay tribute to her mother-in-law, the late Rosemary Clooney, who was a dear friend of Catingub and the Honolulu orchestra. Meanwhile, Catingub's putting the finishing touches on new charts at his 'Ewa Beach home for this weekend's pop concerts with Yvonne Elliman and Kalapana. ...

When The Brothers Cazimero performed earlier this month at the Hollywood Bowl, Robert and Roland found the aloha spirit alive within the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Among the lineup were four former members of the Honolulu Symphony, including Leslie Resnick (oboe), Joshua Ranz (clarinet), Harry Shirinian (viola), Debbie Price (violin), plus Ken Wild (formerly with Seawind). ...
