Campbell educator's pathway to success
Throughout the endless debate over school reform, one consistent theme emerges: Successful schools almost always are led by a dynamic, engaged principal.
In that context, Hawai'i is fortunate to have among its cadre of dedicated educators Gail Awakuni, principal at Campbell High School.
Awakuni has been honored as the Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. It is the first time a principal from Hawai'i has won this prestigious national honor.
Awakuni was cited for a variety of her efforts. But since money is often used as measures of achievement, consider this: In the four years Awakuni has been at Campbell, the value of college scholarship offers to students there has leaped from $700,000 in year one to $4.8 million last year.
Now, that's success. Congratulations.
