Richard Mendez and son Thor shared Skiddles candy during yesterday's get-together at Wheeler Army Airfield. Mendez and other soldiers from the Hawai'i Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery, will leave early next month for special training on the Mainland, followed by a yearlong deployment in Iraq. Battalion leaders decided it was time for a one big get-together. See story.

Marine Cpl. Matt Howard got a hug from his girlfriend, Kanani O'Sullivan, last night as he and more than 90 other members of the 3rd Radio Battalion returned to Marine Corps Base Hawai'i after a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf region for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Upon hearing the order to bring their ship to life, crew members of the USS Chung-Hoon run to their posts aboard their newly commissioned ship. The guided-missile destroyer is named after Rear Adm. Gordon Pai'ea Chung-Hoon, a Honolulu-born war hero. See story.
