Police Beat: Shopper bites officer

Advertiser Staff

A 25-year-old homeless woman was arrested at the Ala Moana Center last night after she allegedly bit a store security officer who was trying to detain her for suspicion of shoplifting.

Police said the security officer told them he saw the woman put several items in her handbag, then watched her go to another aisle of the store, take several more items off a shelf and go to a cash register.

The security officer said the woman paid for the second batch of items, but not the ones in her handbag. He said he followed the woman out of the store, identified himself and told her she was being detained for shoplifting.

The store officer told police the woman tried to walk away and that he took hold of her wrist while attempting to handcuff her. He said the woman bit him on the right wrist but he was able to subdue and restrain her until police arrived.

Police then arrested the woman on suspicion of third-degree assault and fourth-degree theft.

Bat used in fight

A 28-year-old Makakilo man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault after he allegedly struck a 36-year-old man with a baseball bat.

Police said the two men were arguing at a home on Makakilo Drive about 7:30 p.m. when the younger man struck the older one with the bat. Police were already on their way to the scene in response to a call about the argument.

Attacker wields machete

Police yesterday arrested a 29-year-old man in Mokule'ia after he alleged attacked a 30-year-old man with a machete.

Police said both men are homeless and that their families were arguing when the suspect struck the victim with the machete about 2:40 p.m.

Police described the victim's wounds as "substantial."

Police arrived, recovered the machete and arrested the suspect.

Counterfeit bills passed

Police arrested a 31-year-old Mo'ili'ili man yesterday after he allegedly tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes from a Kaimuki gas station.

Police said the man went to the service station at the corner of South King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard at about 5:55 a.m. and gave the cashier a bogus $20 bill for the cigarettes. The cashier recognized the bill as a fake and called police who arrested the suspect.

In a similar incident, police yesterday arrested a 30-year-old Kane'ohe man who allegedly passed a counterfeit $100 bill at a Kane'ohe service station late Wednesday night.

Police said the suspect approached the cashier and asked if he could have change for the $100 bill.

Police said the cashier returned the change and moments later discovered the bill was counterfeit.

The suspect was arrested when he returned to the service station while police were still there, filling out a report form.
