Resolutions opposing a Waiahole land transfer from the state Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawai'i to the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has been set for hearings in state Senate and House committees.
The House of Representatives committees on Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs will conduct a hearing on House Concurrent Resolution 139 at 10:15 this morning in Conference Room 325.
The Senate committees on Water, Land and Agriculture, and Commerce, Consumer Protection and Housing will hold a hearing on Senate Concurrent Resolution 178 at 2 p.m. Monday in Conference Room 212.
The state purchased the land in question in 1977 to ensure agriculture use in Waiahole and Waikane Valley at a time when urban development threatened the area. People who lived and farmed there remained, with the state granting them 55-year leases administered by Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawai'i. HCDCH has said it wants to turn the property over to Hawaiian Home Lands because it can better manage agriculture and residential lots.
Members of the Waiahole-Waikane Community Association unanimously opposed the transfer. The association is made up of 81 of the 92 leaseholders in the valley.
