Outrigger Enterprises yesterday broke ground on its $460 million Waikiki Beach Walk project.

The company is redeveloping the 7.9-acre Lewers Street area into an upscale combination of hotels, restaurants, stores and entertainment destinations.

David Carey, Outrigger Enterprises president and CEO, said: "Waikiki Beach Walk represents an exciting new era for Waikiki, one that brings new energy and vitality to one of the world's most beloved tourist destinations."

Gas price sets another record

The average price for regular gasoline on O'ahu rose to a record $2.375, according to yesterday's AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

It was the third consecutive record-setting day amid continuing increases in global crude oil costs.

The rising prices helped push the statewide average up slightly to $2.466 a gallon, also a new high.

In Wailuku, Maui, regular gas averaged $2.719 a gallon. In Hilo on the Big Island, it averaged $2.507 a gallon.
