Maryknoll holds off Kamehameha in opener, 44-41

Advertiser Staff

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu had its allotment of girls basketball Division I state tournament berths shrink from three to two this year, and two days into the regular season, it already looks like a mad scramble.

Maryknoll made the first big move last night by knocking off perennial power Kamehameha, 44-41, at Hawai'i Baptist Academy's gym. It was the season opener for both teams.

Kamehameha has won eight state championships since 1988, including three of the past six. Maryknoll has made it to the state semifinals just once, losing to Iolani in the 1987 title game.

But Maryknoll's veteran lineup helped the Spartans maintain a lead for most of last night's game. They led 23-22 at the half and stretched it to 38-31 entering the fourth period.

The Warriors closed to 42-39 with under a minute remaining after Tiana Abbley's third 3-pointer of the game, but could not get closer as Maryknoll sank two free throws and did not allow another basket until two seconds remained.

Senior post Sela Fisilau led the Spartans with 13 points, with senior forward Cheryl Lee and sophomore guard Nicole Fu each adding 12 points.

Abbley led Kamehameha with 14 points. Junior guard Tatri Lorenzo and sophomore forward Ana Viena-Lota, two of the Warriors' key players in last year's state tournament, played sparingly last night and went scoreless.

Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said neither of the two was limited by injury.

"The people who played were the ones who did the best job in practice," Cockett said. "I thought we actually played a courageous game considering who was in there most of the time. But Maryknoll has a lot of experience, and they did a good job of keeping their composure and shooting the ball."

The ILH's allotment of Division I state tournament berths was reduced after St. Francis opted for Division II status this season.
