Fresno St. sweeps Hawai'i in softball

Nichole Willis doubled to left-center field to score two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lift No. 18 Fresno State to a 5-3 victory over Hawai'i and a sweep of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Fresno State (23-8, 2-0) won the first game, 3-1. The Bulldogs' Jamie Southern pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two.

Fresno State's Christina Clark hit her 47th career homer in the sixth inning of the first game to become the WAC's career home run leader.

The series finale will be played at 8:30 a.m. today.



HPU stumbles late in 2-1 loss to Billings

Montana State-Billings scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Hawai'i Pacific, 2-1, yesterday in the Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

Stephanie Cochrun singled in pinch runner Anna Henderson with the tying run, then Cochrun scored the game-winner on a double by Cami Rainey.

Billings' Joey Ehnes pitched a four-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

HPU's Jennifer Baron pitched four shutout innings before being replaced by Clerisse Lemke.



Hawai'i-Hilo drops pair in Modesto

Cal State Dominguez Hills scored three runs in the fifth inning to beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-1, yesterday in the Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

Dominguez Hills' rally consisted of two hits and a Vulcans' error.

Lisa Jackson batted 2 for 4 with a double for Hilo.

In a later game, Megan Spano singled in Christina Vaughn in the bottom of the ninth to lift Cal State San Bernardino to a 1-0 victory over Hilo (22-6).



BYU-Hawai'i topples Sonoma State, 6-4

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Brooke Hilton pitched a six-hitter and allowed one earned run in a 6-4 victory over Sonoma State yesterday in the Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

Sherri Howell and Amanda Hino each drove in two runs for the Seasiders.

BYU-Hawai'i improved to 14-21, while Sonoma State dropped to 14-2-1.



BASEBALL

Big Island, O'ahu reach AJA title game

Thad Estrada batted 3 for 6 with a grand slam and seven RBIs as the Big Island beat Maui, 14-6, in the Hawai'i State AJA Baseball Tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

Estrada's grand slam came in an eight-run eighth when the Big Island had six hits, drew four walks and benefitted from three errors.

The Big Island will face O'ahu, a 12-2 winner over Kaua'i, in today's championship game.

Derek Honma homered and drove in three runs and Corey Ishigo went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for O'ahu.

Maui and Kaua'i will meet in the consolation game today at 10 a.m. The title game will start at 1 p.m.



Sea Warriors split with Dominguez Hills

Michael Kealoha batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Brandon Sato went 3 for 5 with three runs scored as Hawai'i Pacific scored eight runs in the first inning, then held off Cal State Dominguez Hills, 10-9, to salvage a split yesterday at Modesto, Calif.

Cruz Hatanaka allowed nine runs in 6¡ innings for the win.

Dominguez Hills scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh before Josh Guerra recorded the final two outs for the save.

In the first game, Dominguez Hills scored on a throwing error by the shortstop in the bottom of the seventh to win, 7-6.

The Sea Warriors are 20-11 and the Toros are 15-18.

Ching scores, but Earthquakes play to tie

Hawai'i's Brian Ching scored a goal, but the San Jose Earthquakes wasted a 2-0 lead in playing the New England Revolution to a 2-2 tie last night in a MLS game at San Jose, Calif.

Ching, a Kamehameha Schools alum, gave the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, scoring on a header off a Brad Davis cross.
