Fresno State completes softball sweep over UH

Jamie Southern pitched a six-hitter, and Shauna Johnson drove in the game's only run as Fresno State beat Hawai'i, 1-0, yesterday to complete a three-game sweep at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Southern walked one and struck out seven for the Bulldogs, who beat UH twice on Saturday.

In the Bulldogs' fourth, Leticia Pacheco was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rachel Donaldson. Pacheco reached third on a single by Kristin Sylvester and scored on Johnson's single to left field.

Hawai'i's Melissa Coogan gave up nine hits, walked one and struck out one in a complete-game performance.

Tracie Uchima and Kaulana Gould each had two hits for Hawai'i, which had lead-off singles in the first four innings.

Fresno State is 24-8, 3-0. Hawai'i is 20-20, 1-5.

UH-Hilo wins two at Modesto tournament

The University of Hawai'i- Hilo won the Bronze Bracket of the Tournament of Champions with a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State and a 5-2 win over Grand Canyon University yesterday at Modesto, Calif.

In other tournament games, Hawai'i Pacific lost to San Francisco State, 1-0, then beat host Cal State Stanislaus, 8-3, and finished as runner-up in the Silver Bracket. Cal State San Bernardino defeated Chaminade, 7-1.

Humboldt State was 7-0 and won the Gold Bracket title.

UH-Hilo finished 3-3 in the tournament, HPU 2-4, Brigham Young-Hawai'i 1-3 and Chaminade 1-4.

Hawai'i players named to the all-tournament team were utility player Brandi Peiler and infielder Nicole Kalakau of HPU and catcher Natalie Fujimoto of UH-Hilo.

In highlights from yesterday's games:

• The Vulcans' Sarah Steele pitched a three-hit shutout over Sonoma State.

• Zoie Sevilla went 3 for 3, and Lisa Jackson had two hits and scored two runs in UH-Hilo's victory over Grand Canyon.

• Jennifer Baron was 2 for 4, including two runs scored and two RBIs, in HPU's victory over Cal State Stanislaus. Peiler added a solo homer for HPU.

• HPU's Clerisse Lemke pitched a one-hitter, but that hit and a fielder's choice helped score San Francisco State's only run in the second inning.

BASEBALL

O'ahu beats Hawai'i for state AJA title

Kelton Otsuka and Sean Yamashita combined on a seven-hitter and Sheridan Midas pounded 16 hits to give O'ahu the 70th Hawai'i State AJA Baseball Tournament title with a 10-3 victory over the Waiakea Pirates of the Big Island at Aloha Stadium yesterday.

Otsuka allowed six hits with four strikeouts and no walks in six innings. Yamashita gave up one hit with five strikeouts and a walk in three innings.

Sheridan's Shay Hirota, who was 2 for 5 with a double yesterday, was named the tournament's most valuable player. Jared Kato was 3 for 5 with a double for Sheridan.

Klayford Naka'ahiki struck out nine and walked three in a complete game for Waiakea.

Sheridan's Corey Ishigo hit .571 to win the tournament's batting title. Waiakea's Thad Estrada won the RBI award with eight.

In the consolation game, Kalaheo of Kaua'i defeated Asahi of Maui, 10-2.

Dominguez Hills edges Hawai'i Pacific, 5-4

Cal State Dominguez Hills scored four runs in the second inning and held off Hawai'i Pacific, 5-4, yesterday in Carson, Calif.

Ricky Eda batted 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, and Chris Martinez drove in two runs for Dominguez Hills (16-18).

Grandon Costa and Alika Kuraoka hit solo homers for Hawai'i Pacific (20-12).

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Metzger, new partner win AVP opener

Punahou alum Stein Metzger and partner Jake Gibb eased past fifth-seeded Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard, 21-14, 21-13, yesterday to win the men's title of the Association of Volleyball Professionals' Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Open.

Olympic gold medalists Misty May and Kerri Walsh opened their beach volleyball season the same way they ended 2004 — looking nearly unbeatable. May and Walsh defeated Elaine Youngs and Rachel Wacholder, 21-18, 21-19, for the women's title.

Metzger and Gibb, seeded sixth, won eight of their nine matches in the tournament and claimed a title in their first event playing together. Metzger and Holdren were partners at last year's Athens Olympics.

May and Walsh were the tournament's only undefeated team (6-0) and outscored opponents, 252-177.

The men's and women's winning teams each split $20,000.

The AVP is scheduled to make a return visit to Honolulu Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

TRIATHLON

Canadians sweep at Lavaman event

British Columbia's Simon Whitfield and Jill Savege won titles at the Lavaman Triathlon yesterday in West Hawai'i.

The triathlon included a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run through Kona and Waikoloa.

Whitfield, of Victoria, won the men's title in 1 hour, 55 minutes, 3 seconds. Brent McMahon, also of Victoria, was second in 1:57:19.

Savege, of Penticton, won the women's title in 2:03:34. Tina Walter of Germany was second in 2:05:52.

The International Triathlon Union Honolulu World Cup is scheduled for April 16.
