The University of Hawai'i has stepped up security at Hamilton Library following a series of deliberately set fires in the facility over the last several days, officials said today.The18 fires were all minor, but officials warned of the potential for greater harm if the fires aren't stopped.
"It appears that someone is trying to get attention through these malicious acts of vandalism," university librarian Diane Perushek said in a statement.
Effective immediately, anyone entering the library will be required to sign in and provide photo ID. A video surveillance system is being set up to record activity at the sign-in point.
Library users were asked to be on the lookout for suspicious people and activities and to report anything unusual.
