QUICK BITES
Two culinary award nominees have Island ties

Advertiser Staff

Nominees for the 2005 International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook Awards include two with Hawai'i connections:

• Making the short list in the Health and Special Diet category was Kathleen Daelemans' "Getting Thin and Loving Food" (Houghton Mifflin, 2004). Daelemans, who worked on Maui for some years and developed a spa menu for the Grand Wailea Resort, had a best seller in "Cooking Thin With Chef Kathleen" and hosted a nationally broadcast TV cooking show by that name. She lost more than 75 pounds while eating well and often.

• Another book with more tenuous Island connections was nominated in the American category. It is "Foods of the Americas: Native Recipes and Traditions" by Fernando and Marlene Divina (Ten Speed Press, 2004), developed as part of the celebration by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. It includes a few Isle recipes.

Chow down, watch waiters' obstacle race

Hiroyuki Sakai

Fire up the Palm and add a note for the weekend of April 29-May 1: It's time for the Hawai'i State Culinary Expo at Kapi'olani Community College, where college and high school culinary students will compete in categories from the serious (cold platter) to the silly (waiters' obstacle race). Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai will be special guest and there will be all manner of demonstrations, from ice carving to how to handle truffles. The final phase of the Cooking with Meadow Gold Culinary Contest will take place, too.

KCC is looking for volunteers to help (work a shift then enjoy the event free); e-mail dwire@hawaii.edu. Tickets are $10 at the door and include $5 worth of scrips.
