Punahou fends off Maryknoll
By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer
The Maryknoll School girls basketball team's opportunity to knock off a second straight powerhouse withered away with the referees' whistles last night at Punahou's Hemmeter Field House.
Eugene Tanner The Honolulu Advertiser The Spartans led 26-24 at the half, but guard Jessica Akamine was called for two quick fouls in the third period and sat down with four fouls midway through the quarter. The Buffanblu took advantage of her absence to grab a 41-35 lead entering the final period.
Akamine, who scored eight points and made several steals in the first half, did not return until early in the fourth quarter with Punahou ahead 47-37. She fouled out with 3:58 to play.
"Jessica is a crucial part of their team, so when she went out, that was to our advantage," said Buffanblu guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay, who led all scorers with 18 points. "At halftime, we talked about being more aggressive taking the ball up the court. We went after them more. But Maryknoll is a great team, and we knew they were going to come to play. We weren't expecting an easy game."
Nicole Fu's 3-pointer with 44 seconds left cut Punahou's lead to 50-44, but free throws by Dacanay and Sophie Merrifield pushed the lead to 52-44 and the Spartans could manage only one more basket with nine seconds remaining.
Maryknoll coach Bob Samson acknowledged Akamine's foul trouble was a big factor.
"To begin with, we're not that deep," Samson said. "To lose somebody of that caliber a senior leader that hurt us."
In contrast, Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said his team's depth proved valuable.
"Our bench did a great job, and I think we eventually wore (the Spartans) down," Taylor said. "We had 12 turnovers in the first half and they hurt us by attacking our press and finishing shots on the other side. In the second half, I think they only got two transition baskets. People like Chelsea Deptula, Tessa (Sonobe), Shaena (Kuehu), Ciana (Aiwohi) really stepped up. Stacy Brossy had a great fourth quarter. We pride ourselves on being a 'team of 15.' "
Actually, only 14 were available last night as starting guard Christine Takara sat out with a sprained right ankle suffered in Friday's victory over Mid-Pacific. Takara, a second-team Advertiser All-State selection last season, is hoping for doctor's clearance today.
