Three athletes receive Pac-10 academic honors

The Pac-10 Conference announced its winter sports All-Academic teams, and three Hawai'i athletes received recognition.

California senior Caleb Rowe, a 2001 Baldwin graduate, was named to the swimming and diving first team after earning a 3.66 grade point average in political science/history.

Stanford sophomore Hongzhe Sun, a 2003 Iolani graduate, was named to the swimming and diving second team after earning a 3.18 GPA in management science and engineering.

Washington senior Tacia LaBatte, a 2000 Castle graduate, was named to the gymnastics second team after earning a 3.65 GPA in communications.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor.

More academic honors

• Cal State Northridge sophomore guard Megan Ching (Kamehameha '03 of Honolulu) was named to the Big West Winter All-Academic Team.

Ching is a biology major. To be eligible, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be a sophomore and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

Men's Volleyball

• Graceland (Lamoni, Iowa) freshman setter Ainoa Miyashiro (Kamehameha '04) is fourth in the NAIA with 10.99 assists per game and sophomore libero Ryan Gonzales (Mililani '03) is third with 2.59 digs per game.

Miyashiro was the Mid America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Setter of the Week for January 24-31.

• Lindenwood (Saint Charles, Mo.) senior libero Devin Hori (Kohala '00) is fourth in the NAIA with 2.46 digs per game.

• Missouri Valley freshman outside hitter Adam Tuifagu (Kamehameha '04) is 10th with a .365 hitting percentage and fifth with 3.87 kills per game.

The MAMVIC Tournament begins Friday, with all three teams participating.

Baseball

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) Community College's Marc Nobriga (Saint Louis '04) struck out 10 in a 4-2 win over Ohlone on March 31.

Sophomore Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) broke a 2-2 deadlock in the seventh inning with an RBI double with two outs. He added another RBI hit in the ninth inning for an insurance run.

• Yakima Valley (Wash.) Community College sophomore pitcher Davin Muramoto (Kalani) pitched six-plus innings to help the team win its first conference game, a 9-4 victory over Walla Walla Community College.

In the second game of the doubleheader, a 12-1 loss, shortstop Nick Sargeant (Kalaheo) batted 2 for 3.

Softball

• Portland State sophomore right fielder Kimi Daniel (Sacred Hearts of Kane'ohe) hit a two-run single in a three-run inning seventh that lifted Portland State to a 3-2 victory over Loyola Marymount Sunday.

• Notre Dame de Namur (Belmont, Calif.) senior Erika Miyahira (Punahou '01) had five hits in a two-game sweep over Bethany March 28.

In the first game, senior Skylar Tokumine (University High '01 of Honolulu) combined with another pitcher to hold Bethany to two hits.

Women's Tennis

• Cleveland State sophomore Sarah Galon (Leilehua '03 of Wai'anae) beat Ashley Coulson of Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles April 1.

She teamed with Morgan Ungerott to claim an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, over Coulson and Jill Carie.

COMMITMENT

• Kamehameha senior outfielder Nick Freitas will sign with the University of Miami to play baseball, according to his father.

Frank Freitas said his son visited the campus in December, and attended the Jim Morris Baseball Clinic for hitting and defense. He was then offered a spot on Miami's 2005-06 roster.

Freitas, a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection, also received early acceptance into the College of Communications/Broadcasting, according to his father.
