POLICE BEAT
Stolen car leads to arrest

Advertiser Staff

Two men, ages 18 and 21, were arrested about 7 a.m. yesterday in downtown Honolulu after a veteran police officer spotted a Ford Explorer parked in a tow-away zone on Nu'uanu Avenue.

The officer, a patrol sergeant, followed the car as it pulled away and traveled toward South Pauahi and Fort streets. A check on the Explorer's license plate showed a car rental company had reported the vehicle stolen.

The sergeant and back-up patrol units converged on the car and arrested the driver on suspicion of operating a stolen vehicle.

Police then searched the car, found a packet of what appeared to be drugs in the glove compartment and arrested both the driver and a passenger on suspicion of second-degree promotion of dangerous drugs.

Charge filed in counterfeit checks

A 42-year-old Kamehameha Heights man was charged yesterday with two counts of second-degree forgery and two counts of second-degree theft stemming from an Oct. 28 incident in which he allegedly deposited two counterfeit checks, totaling $3,450, to his savings account.

Police said Wesley F.H. Chun forged the checks to look as if they were issued by a Mainland brokerage firm. They said Chun deposited the money into his account and then quickly withdrew the cash.

Bail for Chun was set at $30,000.

Kailua sexual assault suspect arrested

A 45-year-old Salt Lake man was arrested yesterday in connection with the Feb. 4 sexual assault in Kailua of a 35-year-old woman.

The woman told police she was a patient at a medical facility when she was assaulted by an employee of the facility. Police did not disclose the name of the facility.

The victim was taken after the assault to the Sex Abuse Treatment Center.

Police located a suspect yesterday and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault.

Woman forged check, bank says

A 36-year-old woman was arrested yesterday after she allegedly tried to cash a forged check at a Wai'anae bank.

Police said the same woman successfully cashed a forged check at the bank in February for more than $300.

When the same woman entered the bank yesterday, a teller recognized her and notified police who arrested her on suspicion of second-degree forgery.

Latex gloves prompt arrest

An 18-year-old man was arrested at North King and Kalihi streets early yesterday morning on suspicion of car theft.

A patrol officer pulled the man over at 3:15 a.m. for a minor traffic infraction and noticed he was wearing latex gloves and that the car's steering column had been pried open.

The officer checked the car's registration and contacted the registered owner, a 20-year-old woman, who had not realized her car had been stolen.

The car driver was arrested and taken into custody.
