Fire guts Palama home

Fire gutted an older, single-story house today at the corner of Lopez and Austin lanes in Palama, about a block mauka of the Tamashiro Market.Neighbors said the fire broke out at noon, and spread quickly throughout the wooden house.
The house was occupied by five people, two who were cousins, and three renters, but no tenants were home when the fire started, relatives said.
Thick, acrid smoke poured from the burning building before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. No damage estimate was available. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
