Gas prices again at record highs

The average price for regular gasoline in Honolulu rose more than a penny to a record $2.378 a gallon, according to yesterday's AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Statewide average rose more than a penny to $2.462 a gallon. In Wailuku, Maui, regular gas averaged $2.729 a gallon. In Hilo on the Big Island, it averaged $2.467 a gallon.



Bankruptcies down statewide

Total bankruptcy filings statewide fell 7.4 percent to 840 through the first three months of this year, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Honolulu office.

Chapter 7 liquidation case filings fell 6.8 percent, while Chapter 11 reorganization filings rose 150 percent to 10 cases. Chapter 13 filings, which deal with debt reorganization for individuals, fell nearly 19 percent to 77 cases.



Horizon raises fuel surcharge

Horizon Lines said it will raise its fuel surcharge from 9.2 percent to 10.5 percent beginning April 18, matching competitor Matson Navigation Co.'s surcharge announced last week.

Hawai'i's two major ocean cargo carriers cited rapidly rising fuel costs and said they will monitor prices and adjust the surcharge accordingly. The companies raised the fuel surcharge three times last year.
