Another year, another science fair triumph for Hilo student

For the fourth year in a row, Kimberly Reinhold, a senior at St. Joseph Junior & Senior High School in Hilo, has taken the top prize in the Hawai'i State Science and Engineering Fair.

This year, Reinhold's experiment focused on artificial cognition and memory.

Carmela Minaya of Hanalani Schools and Glenn Lee of Waialua High School were named science teachers of the year.

Reinhold will represent the state at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Arizona next month, along with other top science students from across the state. The following students were the best of the 345 science projects in the state science fair held at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this week.

Senior Research: First, Kimberly Reinhold, St. Joseph Junior & Senior High School; second, Kaitlin Luther and Alana Yurkanin, Baldwin High School; third, Jessie Ann K. Pa'ahana, Kamehameha High School. Honorable Mention: Genevieve C. Pang, Alayna R. Betsill and Taryn M. Takahashi, Baldwin High School (team project); Kawakahi Amina, Kamehameha High School; Andrew Knutson, Kamehameha High School.

Junior Research: First, Lucia Mocz, Mililani Middle School; second, Blake T. Tolentino, St. John Vianney School; third, Aaron A. Rozon, Kapa'a Middle School. Honorable Mention: William L. Sims, Kealakehe Intermediate School; Conrad C. Sanborn, Kealakehe Intermediate School; Naomi R. Perry, St. Anthony Parish School.

Junior Display: First, Scott A. Skirlo, Damien Memorial School; second, Ashley L. Maginot and Natasha M. Oxe, Trinity Lutheran School (team project); third, Harley Watanabe,

St. Andrew's Priory. Honorable Mention: Jaymee Kau, St. Andrew's Priory; Aaron T. Sewake, Waiakea Intermediate School; Alexander J. Mattes, Damien Memorial School.

Along with Reinhold, Hawai'i's other representatives to the International Science and Engineering Fair are:

Leeward District Science Fair winners: Johanna E. Dela Cruz (Kapolei High School), Andrew M. Abe (Pearl City High).

Windward District Science Fair winner: Devin Elting (Castle High School).

Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools: Kawakahi Amina (Kamehameha), Clifford Kopono (Kamehameha), Vaseem Anwar, Kevin Luu (Maryknoll/team project).
