Kailua shuts down Kaiser, 4-0

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kailua's Kevin Matsumoto proved yesterday he's the type of pitcher who can effectively sacrifice velocity for control.

Kaiser second baseman Andy Uehara tags out Kailua's Preston Nakata on a stolen base attempt in the first inning. Kailua won the OIA Eastern Division game, 4-0, behind the pitching of senior right-hander Kevin Matsumoto.

Matsumoto pitched a five-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts in a 4-0 victory over visiting Kaiser in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division showdown.

Kailua improved to 5-0; Kaiser dropped to 3-1.

Matsumoto, a senior right-hander, said his curveball, fastball and slider were working for him yesterday, and he also made big pitches to get out of trouble.

"I throw a lot of (batting practice) fastballs and I come a little faster when I'm ahead in the count," Matsumoto said.

He had superb control despite rain and steady wind blowing in from left field.

"With the circumstances the way they were today, with the rain and wind, he threw the ball pretty well," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said.

Kaiser went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left one runner on base in six of the seven innings.

"He toughened up with runners on base and got big outs," Ishigo said.

Matsumoto, who threw 55 of his 85 pitches for strikes, only got into trouble in the seventh.

Kailua's Kevin Matsumoto was at his crafty best as the Surfriders remained unbeaten with a 4-0 victory.

The first two batters of the inning reached on a walk and hit by pitch. After a flyout to right, Matsumoto caught a liner by Scott Uehara around his knees and threw to shortstop Tyler Harrison to double up the runner at second.

Matsumoto didn't go to a three-ball count in the first six innings, and only two Kaiser runners reached third.

"This guy was the best pitcher we faced so far," Kaiser coach Peter Ho said.

Kailua worked some two-out magic in the early innings.

In the second, Kaiser starter Russell Sasaki allowed a leadoff single, but induced a groundball double play.

Kurt Sasaoka followed with a single and went to second on a walk to Aaron Kunioka. Both runners advanced on a double steal. Sasaoka scored on a wild pitch and Kunioka scored from third on a single by Michael D'Alessio.

In the third, Kekoa Su'a reached on a one-out single and moved to second after a walk to Ryan Rodrigues. After a strikeout, Sasaoka drove in Su'a with a bloop single to left field. Rodrigues scored on a balk.
