Kalaheo cruises past Kaiser, 69-44

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Fresh off a disappointing road loss at Kahuku on Saturday, the Kalaheo High School girls basketball team played a near-perfect game last night in defeating Kaiser, 69-44.

The victory kept the visiting Mustangs (5-1) a game behind Kahuku (6-0) in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division. Kaiser, which plays at Kahuku tomorrow, fell to 4-2.

"This was a big win for us because if we lost we'd be two behind the leader, and you definitely don't want to fall too far behind because then even if you beat them the next time around, you need help from others," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "But we've still got to take care of business against everybody else."

The Mustangs certainly took care of business last night, especially in the second period. The Cougars trailed 14-13 entering the quarter after scoring five straight points at the end of the first period, and were behind 16-15 with 6:25 remaining in the half.

But a steal and layup by Shanadee Canon started an 20-6 run to give Kalaheo a 36-21 lead at intermission.

Canon, a sophomore guard who missed a week while out with the flu last month, scored 10 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 21. Teammate Taylor Smith, a senior forward, added 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two assists.

The Mustangs extended the lead to 51-29 in the third quarter, effectively putting the game away with a clinic of shooting, passing and defense.

"It was just like the opposite from Kahuku," Canon said. "After we lost, we said we gotta forget the last game and focus on our next one. I still say Kaiser is a pretty good team."

Cougars coach Lisa Mann said her players lacked the focus their opponent had.

"Take nothing away from Kalaheo, because they put a lot of pressure on us," Mann said. "But we weren't mentally prepared to play today."

Kaiser center Kilioe Ali'ifua, who averaged 21.2 points in her first five OIA games, ended up with just five last night. Through the first three periods, the Mustangs had four 3-pointers to none for the Cougars.

"We hit shots, and that always helps," Furtado said. "If all those early 3's don't go down, then it might have been a different game. But we thought we could win if we could wear them down, and we talked about using more people. They usually use only five, six, seven people, and tonight we went with 10. We were fresher."

Sharde Pratt led Kaiser with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals, and Nicole Lehner added 13 points and two assists.
