Charities benefit from event

Eleven organizations will share $353,536 raised by the Mercedes Championships, according to Kapalua Maui Charities, host of the golf tournament.

Richard Cameron, president of the charities' board of directors, presented the check on March 30 at Wailuku, Maui.

The annual Mercedes Championships features the winners of PGA tournaments from the previous year.

It is played in January at the Kapalua Plantation Course.

The 11 organizations receiving monies are the Boy Scouts of America-Maui County Council, Friends of the Children's Justice Center, Girl Scout Council of Hawai'i, Hale Makua, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui, Lahainaluna High School Foundation, Maui Junior Golf Association, Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, Maui Preparatory Academy and The Art School at Kapalua.

Cameron said since 1999, Kapalua Maui Charities Inc. has contributed more than $1.7 million to the Maui community. For information, call (808) 669-2440.
