What's Up!

FAIR: April 15-16

It's an A-list affair at the annual Iolani School Family Fair, left, with the theme "Starstruck in Hollywood." The entertainment roster includes Maunalua, Round 'n' Round, Azure McCall with Bruce Hamada and Jim Howard, Gabe Baltazar and Friends, Na Palapalai and Weldon Kekauoha and Tapa Groove. This year's fun features a specialties marketplace, gourmet entrees, cooking demonstration, silent auction and boutiques. Sunset at Iolani features movies shown on the football field at 7 p.m. Friday's movie is "Shrek 2," while Saturday offers "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." Free admission.

CONCERT: April 16

Doo-wop that thing with music from the '50s and '60s with legendary harmonizers from that era performing in concert. The Reflections, left, The Coasters and The Capris croon their way down memory lane with such hits as "Shabby Little Hut," "Yakety Yak" and "There's a Moon Out Tonight." Tickets: $40.

FESTIVAL: April 17

Wear your heart on your sleeve for the windward side at the 13th annual I Love Kailua Town Party. The popular Taste of Kailua is back, along with crafts, plant sale, keiki activities, art walk, health screenings and community information booths. Puamana, Coconut Joe, JP Smoketrain and Friends, Pattye's Hula Studio and Oomooeemoo provide the entertainment. The event is a fund-raiser for the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle. Admission is $3 advance, $4 at the event. Children 12 and younger are free.

CONCERT: April 18, 25

Wish the Chamber Music Hawaii's Spring Wind Quintet well, as the ensemble prepares to make its New York and European debuts later this month. The performance marks the first time a professional Hawai'i-based chamber group will perform on the Mainland. The quintet is composed of, from below left, J. Scott Janusch (oboe), James Moffitt (clarinet), Susan McGinn (flute), Jonathan Parrish (horn) and Marsha Schweitzer (bassoon). Tickets: $20 general, $15 seniors, free for students in grades K-12.

STAGE: April 21-24

It's a musical revue of a different tune when the students of Kapi'olani Community College perform "Songs for A New World." Featuring 16 songs, each telling a different story, subjects include Christopher Columbus and Mrs. Santa Claus with music ranging from lyrical ballads to gospel to rock to jazz. Lina Doo and Mimi Wisnosky direct. Tickets: $6.

STAGE: April 21-24

The frisky felines of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running musical "Cats" take their paws over to the Valley Isle after their O'ahu performances. Based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," it's a tale about Grizabella, Rum Tum Tugger, Bustopher Jones and the other Jellicle Cats who romp in the junkyard. Tickets: $10, $35, $47, $65; half-price for those 12 and younger.

Shakespeare's romantic comedy "Twelfth Night or What You Will" takes on a local flavor in "twelf nite o' WATEVA!" Written by late Booga Booga member James Grant Benton, this pidgin retelling is set in the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Terence Knapp directs, in memory of Benton. Among the cast members are, below, Troy Apostol and Noelle Poole. Pre-show chats happen at 7 p.m. April 23 and 30. Tickets, on sale April 11, are $15 general, $12 seniors, military, UH faculty/staff, $10 non-UH Manoa students, $3 UH-Manoa students.

Kennedy Theatre's 2004-05 Late Night Series wraps up with the play "Arabian Night." Written by German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig and translated into English by David Tushingham, this surreal drama focuses on an apartment building's tenants and landlord, as illusion and reality intertwine. UH-Manoa graduate directing student Peter Ruocco directs. Tickets are $8 general, $7 seniors, military, non-UH Manoa students and UH faculty/staff, and $3 UH Manoa students; for mature audiences.

DANCE: April 29-May 8

Michael Flatley's energetic "Lord of the Dance" troupe will kick up its heels in the Blaisdell Concert Hall. This international Celtic dancing spectacle features more than 40 dancers performing a passionate love story based on Irish folklore. Tickets are $49 and $59 general, and $44 and $54 for the April 30 and May 1 matinees and Wednesday-Thursday night shows. Groups of 20 or more get a 10 percent discount, 732-7733.

Uncover the enchanting mysteries of "The Secret Garden," presented by Army Community Theatre. Based on the classic children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this award-winning Broadway musical tells the story of a young orphan who revives a long-hidden garden and in turn, her relatives, too. Laurence Paxton is Archibald Craven, TX Tario is Colin Craven and Channing Weir plays Mary Lennox. Glenn Cannon directs. Tickets are $14 and $17 general, and $8 and $10 children 12 and younger.

Karaoke challenge

This time it's the Black Team, led by Bobby Ishihara (Class of 1950) vs. the Gold Team, led by Marilyn Kobata (Class of 1959). Yes, it's the McKinley Alumni Association's 4th annual Karaoke Challenge, 4:30 to 9 p.m. April 30 at the school auditorium. The public is invited to witness 26 alumni singing their best. Tickets are $20, including dinner in the cafeteria and the show from 6:30 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m. It's a benefit for the association's Scholarship and Special Projects Fund. 949-5659.

Barbershop sounds

Is it a wee late for St. Patrick's Day? Not to worry: "Erin Go Brah," an original production written by Ralph Brandt, is the centerpiece of a pair of Sounds of Aloha Chorus concerts at the Hawai'i Theatre. It's the story of Liam Leprechaun and his friends from Ireland who travel to Hawai'i, where distant cousin Manny O'Hune helps in the quest for the pot of gold that would save an ancient pub from extinction. The Perfect Gentlemen, a national a cappella champion quartet, is the special guest. Other performers include the Pacific Trades and the Tropichords. Curtain time is 7:35 p.m. April 29-30. Tickets are $14, $20 and $27; $5 discount for seniors, students, military and theater members. 528-0506.
