School pride tops project

By Suzanne Roig
Advertiser East Honolulu Writer

A group of Kalani High School students and parents wants to energize campus pride with a wall of fame, cafeteria fans and campus lawn tables.

HOW TO HELP

• What: Falcon Fund-raiser Lu'au

• When: 5-7 p.m. May 14

• Tickets: $25 each. Send check or money order to KHAS Lu'au at Kalani High School, 4680 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Honolulu, HI 96821. Or call the school's leadership office at 377-7744, ext. 265. Donations of items to be auctioned at the silent auction also are being accepted.

The Kalani Association of Students has raised $2,000 to purchase banners that will hang from the rafters of the school gym representing the 17 Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and the 14 OIA championship awards the school has won over the past 43 years, since the school opened.

The banners will be unveiled during a fund-raising lu'au May 14 at the school's cafeteria.

"We don't have any hall of fame or anything to recognize athletic achievement," said senior Kimberly Fujinaka, association president. "We hope this will be the start of something that will be continued."

It's all part of a two-year project called "Teamwork is Dreamwork" and launched this year by the association.

To help achieve their goals, students have organized the $25-a-plate lu'au fund-raiser. From each plate, $15 goes directly to the association's fund.

The goal is to raise at least $3,000 from the sale of lu'au tickets and from a silent auction also planned for that day to pay for fans to cool down the cafeteria, Fujinaka said. The lawn tables and benches have been donated.

Any leftover money will be placed in a fund to pay for future projects such as restroom upgrades, campus landscaping, or recycling bins.

"Everything we've done so far (this year) is focused around this one big project," said Fujinaka. "We want the fund-raiser to bring together the students, alumni and parents to raise money for school improvement.

"We hope to make the lu'au an annual event," she said. "Hopefully all the generations will come together for the night. We hope to bridge the gap between the alumni and the current students."

This isn't the first time the school has tried to jumpstart school spirit. Three years ago the leadership class wanted to document the history of the school, the wins, the losses, the scholastic achievement and the success of its alumni. The result was a brochure that does all of that.

This year's effort hopes to build on that momentum.

Student association treasurer Esther Lee, a senior, looks forward to seeing the banners placed along the wall and hung from the gym ceiling.

"We're the first group ever to do something like this," Lee said. "I want to see it happen."
