WAILUKU, Maui — Gen Iinuma has been named Maui County civil defense administrator, effective today. He has been a public health educator with the Maui District Office of the state Department of Health since 1985.

Mayor Alan Arakawa said his office worked closely with Iinuma during the dengue fever outbreak and a West Nile virus scare, and on homeland security and other issues.

Iinuma is a 1966 graduate of Kaimuki High School and studied at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, earning a bachelor's degree in human development and a master's degree in public health. Before joining the Health Department, he worked at St. Francis and Kapi'olani medical centers in Honolulu.

In 2002, Iinuma was honored with the Mayor's Unsung Hero Award for "Outstanding Contributions to the Community."
