Pitching propels UHH to softball sweep

Britni Rodrigues pitched a five-hitter and Sarah Steele tossed a three-hitter as Hawai'i-Hilo swept Western New Mexico, 8-3 and 9-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Silver City, N.M.

Rodrigues (9-0) struck out nine and had trouble with only one Mustang as Meredith Drahota hit three solo homers.

Jeani Jadlot had three hits and Meghan Jost and Zoie Sevilla each drove in two runs for Hilo.

Steele (9-3) had a perfect game through three innings before yielding Drahota's triple and Jessica Garcia's RBI single to start the fourth.

Charity Senas had three hits and Lisa Jackson added two hits and two RBIs for the Vulcans (28-6, 13-1 PacWest).

The Mustangs are 17-19 and 2-10.



BASEBALL

Sacramento State edges Hawai'i-Hilo

Brian Blauser had three hits and two RBIs as Sacramento State beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-5, yesterday in a non-conference game at Sacramento, Calif.

Ethan Katz spaced eight hits over 7 1/3 innings, retiring 12 of 14 batters at one stretch, to help the Hornets improve to 10-19-1.

Christopher Campbell and Johnny Dudoit each had three hits for the Vulcans (2-32).



TRACK AND FIELD

UH's Murray 7th in hammer at UCLA meet

University of Hawai'i junior Novelle Murray placed seventh in the hammer throw yesterday in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

Murray threw the hammer 166 feet, 2 inches. UH's Alexis Fredrick placed eighth with 158-5 and Ku'ulei Karratti finished 11th with 148-6.

UCLA senior Jessica Crosby won with 208-5.



Meet coming up for open, masters athletes

A USA Track and Field meet for open and masters athletes will be held April 17 at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field.

The meet, which will start at 2 p.m., is open to all athletes 10 and older, and will include competition in age groups conforming to USATF categories.

Only track shoes with quarter-inch pyramid spikes are allowed on the UH track, and no outside starting blocks will be permitted.

Participants must register at the track prior to first call for their event. Cost is $2 per event entered. All participants must be members of USATF, and will be able to purchase memberships ($15 per year) at the track.

Matsuyoshi lifts UHH over BYUH, HPU

Ki'ilani Matsuyoshi shot even-par 72 yesterday to win medalist honors and lead Hawai'i-Hilo over Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific at the Turtle Bay's Fazio course.
