Ministries in final meetings today

The Hawaiian Islands Ministries' annual conference, When He Comes, continues today at the Hawai'i Convention Center with 3,500 people from 375 churches and 34 denominations, reports Pam Chun, HIM co-founder.

Today, closing day of the three-day conference, includes morning workshops, a lunch break and Brenda Salter McNeil leading the 1:30 afternoon general session.

There is a $35 fee for a single walk-in session.

Professor to speak on feminist topic

Perle Besserman, a professor of English at Illinois State University, will discuss "Feminist Responses to Fundamentalism in Patriarchal Monotheistic Religion" as part of the spring 2005 Women's Studies Colloquium Series.

The talk will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Saunders 244 on the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus.

Besserman, the author of several non-fiction books and novels, is an expert on Kabbalah, Zen and women's spirituality.

Benefit to honor church volunteers

Later this month, 1,350 people will honor more than 100 volunteers from Catholic parishes across the Islands for the ninth annual Island Treasures benefit.

Parish priests accompany honorees to the dinner, to be held April 29 at the Sheraton Waikiki.

Church supports military families

The Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii is offering a free weekend getaway in May, "Support the Families," for military families who have a member deployed in the Gulf War.

The event takes place May 13-15 at Camp Mokule'ia, and it's a way for the diocese to focus on the needs of military families, Episcopalian or not. It includes free transportation from Neighbor Islands.
