Kalaheo's football coach opts for family

A new arrival meant the departure of Kalaheo High School football coach Tony Tuioti, who resigned Thursday, the day before the birth of his fourth child, Teitum.

Tony Tuioti

Tuioti said leaving was "one of the toughest (decisions) I've had in a long time," but added, "my first priority has to be to my wife and kids."

Teitum, who is 8 pounds, 6 ounces and 21 inches — "the smallest" of the Tuioti children — was born yesterday at around 8 a.m. Tuioti and wife Keala's other children are Teisa, 4, Teivis, 3, and Teilor, 1 1/2.

Tuioti also said it wouldn't fair to the team if he couldn't devote the time and commitment.

"I felt if I stayed on as the head coach I would be cheating the kids (players)," he said. "Because I have so much love and respect for the kids, I didn't want to jeopardize them."

Tuioti, who has been with Kalaheo the past two seasons, resigned in a meeting with school athletic director Lewis Fuddy.

"I've been dreading this year for the longest time, because of the attachment we have with the (Kalaheo players)," said Tuioti.

He amassed a 7-9 record, including a spot in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Division playoffs in 2003.

His return to coaching football will likely be in a few years, but "if I do come back and coach, it will be the same place. I really appreciate Kalaheo; they've been really great to me."

But he said he will probably return to coaching before then, for Teisa, who is nearing the ready age for soccer or softball.

"I'll have to go and pick up some books and watch some instructional videos," he said.

Tuioti, 28, played high school football in Tustin, Calif., and at the college level for the University of Hawai'i from 1996-1999.

He served as a graduate assistant for the Warriors for two years.

He has a bachelor's degree in sociology and master's in education administration and works at Hale Kipa, a center that provides services for at-risk, high-risk youth.

Kalaheo will be accepting resumes for the opening.

Applications should be mailed by April 18 to:
