Freshman keeps Punahou unbeaten

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Punahou's Shawna-Lei Kuehu is a freshman and she's only been playing basketball for four years.

Punahou's Shawna-Lei Kuehu shoots over the defense of Kamehameha's Lilia Lee during last night's game. Kuehu dominated the low post with 25 points to lead the Buffanblu to victory.

It didn't seem like it last night as host Punahou beat Kamehameha, 62-46, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game Division I game.

Kuehu scored 17 of her 25 points in the third quarter, and grabbed 11 rebounds to help Punahou improve to 3-0.

The 5-foot-9 forward dominated the low post, scoring primarily with her back to the basket or on putbacks.

"I thought she came out and was aggressive from the get-go," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "When she caught it on the block she was a presence and went to the basket."

Kuehu's big third period included two 3-point plays and enabled Punahou to take a 49-35 lead.

"I would much rather have it on the block area, but if I get it on the outside I'll pop a shot," she said. "But I mostly like it on the inside."

Kuehu finished 10 of 15 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

"What I really like about her is No. 1, she's very humble, and No. 2, she's competitive and she's tenacious and she works really hard," Taylor said. "If you combine those ingredients, all she can do is succeed."

Six of her rebounds came on the offensive end, and she also had two steals and two blocked shots.

"If she didn't have the ball, she was active on the offensive boards," Taylor said. "Defensively, she was moving her feet well, contesting shots and blocked a few shots."

Kamehameha, which fell to 0-3, played a 1-2-2 zone, except for a brief stretch at the beginning of the second half.

"We need a lot of work on defense," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. "We don't know our assignments on defense. We're not getting it right now."

Punahou senior guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay carried the load in the first half with three 3-pointers and 13 points.

"Shanna, we knew they would come out in that 1-2-2 zone, she was aggressive, too," Taylor said. "When she had her shot she took it."

Punahou had numerous open looks and finished 24 of 46 from the field.

Taylor credited assistants Alan Ching and Alan Lum with drawing up an effective game plan.

"We worked really hard on (the zone) the last few days in practice," Taylor said. "We knew where the holes were going to be. It was just a matter of picking the right hole at the right time."

Kuehu said "my whole family played basketball," but she focused on volleyball and paddling growing up.

She added she got interested in basketball after watching her uncle, David Kuehu, who is an 'Aiea High alum, play pickup basketball.
