Ceremony, plaque will honor Cartwright

Advertiser Staff

The unveiling of a plaque honoring the founder of modern day baseball, Alexander Joy Cartwright, will be held April 17, which is the 185th anniversary of his birth.

The ceremony will be held 10:30 a.m. at O'ahu Cemetery on Nu'uanu Avenue.

For the past few years, several baseball friends have gathered on the anniversary date to celebrate Cartwright's contribution to the American sports scene. As an added gesture, it was also decided to place a plaque near the grave site to add to the list of accomplishments Cartwright made to the betterment of life in Hawai'i.

At the April 17 ceremony, Honolulu Advertiser sports writer Ferd Borsch will highlight Cartwright's role in the history of baseball and former Honolulu Star-Bulletin writer Lyle Nelson will list Cartwright's contribution to Hawai'i's social scene.

Author Joe Stanton will provide a short reading on Cartwright.

A no-host luncheon at O'Toole's Irish Pub at 902 Nu'uanu Avenue will be held following the ceremony.
