HPU cheer squad wins three national crowns

Hawai'i Pacific University won three national titles at the National Cheerleaders Association Chick-fil-A Collegiate Championships yesterday at Daytona Beach, Fla.

The HPU Small Co-ed Cheer Team, which consists of no more than four male members, debuted this year at the NCA event and won the national title. It is the third consecutive year that an HPU co-ed team has won the national title.

The HPU All-Girl Stunt Team and the HPU mascot, Sharkey the Sea Warrior, also won national titles. The All-Girl Cheerleading Team is the only all-girl cheer team in Hawai'i. The HPU cheerleading team is led by first-year head coach Matt Parkey.

The HPU dance team placed third in the nation. Last year, the dance team won the event.

The Chick-fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championship is the largest event of its kind in the world with teams from across the U.S., Mexico, Japan and Canada.



Baseball

UH-Hilo rained out

Yesterday's game between Hawai'i-Hilo and Sacramento State was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today at Sacramento, Calif.

The Hornets (10-19-1) won the first game of the series Thursday, 7-5. The Vulcans are 2-32.



Golf

Hawai'i in 14th place

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team stands in a tie for 14th place after the first two rounds of the Thunderbird Invitational at Tempe, Ariz., yesterday.

Hawai'i is at 596, 33 strokes behind first-place UNLV.

Ryan Perez is the top Hawai'i golfer after shooting 72-74—146.

Nathan Lashley and Kipp Riehle of Arizona lead the individual scoring at 138.
