Homeless shelter may open in 2006
Advertiser Staff
LIHU'E, Kaua'i Kaua'i's first homeless shelter should be open by late 2006, employing an old state baseyard building and a series of portable structures.
Mayor Bryan Baptiste said the county is working with Kaua'i Economic Opportunity and other agencies in developing the 2-acre Wehe Road site. He said the need is enormous.
"The list of illegal campers and homeless is growing exponentially," Baptiste said. Kaua'i Economic Opportunity's Care-a-Van program provides services to about 500 homeless people monthly.
The agency's chief executive officer, MaBel Fujiuchi, said the $2.3 million cost of the project is being covered primarily through federal sources, but also by the county and private donors.

A consultant for a proposed bridge replacement project in Punalu'u has submitted its final environmental assessment with a finding of no significant impact, should the structure be built.
The state Department of Transportation wants to demolish the South Punalu'u Bridge and replace it with a new 54-foot-wide, 160-foot-long span. The new bridge would have two lanes, paved shoulders and a shielded walk/bikeway that meets American with Disabilities Act guidelines.
Nearby projects have identified human burial sites, and an archaeological monitoring plan has been developed for the project. No other archaeological or historic properties have been identified in the vicinity of the bridge. The project is not expected to affect threatened or endangered species.
The project requires numerous permits. Construction is projected to begin later this year, taking about 18 months to complete.
