Kamehameha rallies past MPI

After a roller-coaster 24-hour period overlapping Friday and yesterday, the Kamehameha baseball team found itself where it always wanted to be: atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings.

The Warriors used a nine-run sixth inning yesterday to rally past Mid-Pacific, 10-6, at Ala Wai Field. Kamehameha, which knocked previously unbeaten Punahou out of first place with a 4-3 victory Friday, improved to 8-1.

MPI fell to 5-4.

Earlier in the day, the standings were of little importance to the Warriors after a scary incident during batting practice. Head coach Vern Ramie, who was throwing from the mound, was hit in the left eye by a batted ball that ricocheted off the top of the batting cage.

Ramie suffered a laceration above the eyelid, but it was feared he also had internal bleeding, so an ambulance was called and he was taken to Straub Clinic and Hospital. Kamehameha athletic director Erv Kau said Ramie was later transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was expected to stay overnight and await another diagnosis today.

Kau said Ramie might need surgery depending on the extent of the injury.

"They're going to wait a day and see what they can find," Kau said. "He'll be out (of baseball) at least four or five days; they want him to take it easy."

Warriors senior Nick Freitas said the incident affected the team's focus early in the game.

"We were all really worried about coach, because he means a lot to us," Freitas said. "He cares a lot about every one of us. I think it shocked a lot of people, and we came out flat. But then when we came back, we got the same intensity we had (Friday) night and we did what we had to do."

Mid-Pacific took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Jayson Kramer's run-scoring double and Aaron Fujiki's RBI single, then made it 4-0 one inning later on Adam Tamashiro's run-scoring double and Kip Masuda's RBI groundout.

Kamehameha closed to 4-1 in the bottom half after Eli Chee's run-scoring single, but the Owls answered immediately with two runs in the top of the sixth when Nathan Rice scored on an error and Reece Uyeno drove in a run with a single to center.

The Warriors then erupted with nine runs in the bottom half, all after two outs. Stuart Kam started the scoring barrage with a two-run double, and Jamie Smeigh and Chee followed with RBI singles to make it 6-5.

A wild-pitch third strike kept the inning alive, then Kamehameha tied it and took the lead on consecutive bases-loaded walks. Makana Kitamura then ripped a three-run double to right field to push the lead to 10-6.

"Kramer (MPI's starter) is so tough — he's one of the better pitchers in our league," said Warriors assistant Al Kam. "He had good command early in the game, but we just had to stay aggressive and keep challenging him."
