Rainbows win four events in L.A. meet

Four University of Hawai'i athletes won events at the UCLA-hosted Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational track and field meet in Los Angeles on Friday.

The Rainbow Wahine winners were:

• Freshman Meghan Weaver, who had a throw of 45 feet, 8 inches in the shot put, edging UC Davis' Kim Gleeson, who tossed 44-6.

• Junior Tasha Monroe finished the 200 meters in 24.72 seconds. UC Davis' Danielle Green was second in 25.94.

• Sophomore Kelly Young finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 9.09 seconds. BYU's Michelle Lindsay was second in 2:09.63.

• Freshman Sabrina Reeve won the 3,000 by more than six seconds in 9:34.48. It was Reeve's first collegiate 3,000 race.

BASEBALL

Vulcans get third win

Sean Tamura singled to score Gary Ahu Jr. and break a 3-all tie in the seventh inning as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Sacramento State, 6-3, yesterday in the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Sacramento, Calif.

Sacramento State won the first game, 7-5.

The Vulcans are 3-33, the Hornets 11-20-1.

In the second game, Ahu, who was 3 for 4, hit a two-run triple in the top of the ninth for the 6-3 lead. Eddie Gutierrez pitched 4¡ innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.

Christopher Campbell led the Vulcans with three hits in the first game.

GOLF

Warriors finish 14th

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished 14th out of 15 teams at the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., yesterday.

UNLV won the tournament at the Karsten Golf Course with a 54-hole score of 859, followed by Pepperdine at 861. The Warriors shot a 305 yesterday and finished at 901.

Arizona's Kipp Riehle shot a 3-under 68 yesterday for a 206 and won by six strokes over teammate Nathan Lashley. Jarett Hamamoto was UH's highest finisher after a 75—223.

SOFTBALL

BYUH, HPU split

Nicole Kalakau went 2 for 4 with six RBIs — including a grand slam in the second inning — to lift Hawai'i Pacific to an 11-0 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in the second game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at BYUH field yesterday.

BYUH's Echo Allred pitched a three-hitter in a 1-0 victory in the first game.

HPU is 27-13 overall and 8-4 in the PacWest. BYUH finishes its season 6-12 and 15-23.

In the second game, HPU's Dayna Berry pitched a two-hitter, striking out four and walking two.

In the first game, Allred struck out four and walked three. Mandy Kirkham had two hits for the Seasiders.

BASKETBALL

UH men's banquet set

The Rainbow Basketball Awards Banquet for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team is Thursday at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel.

Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace will announce several awards, including most outstanding player, most inspirational player and scholar-athlete.

The 'Bows finished 16-13 this past season. The team's three seniors — Jeff Blackett, Vaidotas Peciukas and Jake Sottos — will also be recognized at the banquet.
