HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Goods seized in pawnshop busts

Advertiser Staff

Police raided at least two pawnshops over the weekend that were allegedly selling stolen goods.

Officers seized the entire contents of Ziggy's Pawn Gold & Diamond Buyers on Kapahulu Avenue and Local Pawn in downtown and arrested workers at each business.

Police said the raids were part of their ongoing crackdown on stolen goods being sold by pawnshops. The busts were coordinated for the same day so pawnshop owners dealing in stolen merchandise wouldn't be tipped off and cover their tracks, police said.

Lt. Norman Kau said the owner of Local Pawn was even told the property was stolen but still accepted it from an individual.

By law, pawnshops must keep track of what they buy by having sellers fill out a pawn ticket, which includes personal information and details about the items sold. The ticket also includes a thumbprint of the seller.
