POLICE BEAT
Escape attempt thwarted, officials say

Advertiser Staff

A 43-year-old man who was being held at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center while awaiting sentencing on a theft conviction may now face an attempted escape charge as well.

Prison officials discovered Greg Schoenlein had gone missing when a kitchen work crew made up of jail detainees including Schoenlein was being taken to the facility's kitchen at about 3:30 a.m. today.

The Kalihi complex was placed on lockdown while a second head count was conducted as guards began searching for Schoenlein.

It didn't take long before searchers found torn pieces of clothing and a pool of blood at a spot along the fence on the makai side of the detention center, said Mike Gaede, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Based on the amount of blood that was found, prison officials concluded that Schoenlein probably did not make it over the fence and intensified their search within the complex.

Police and Sheriff's Department deputies converged on the prison and along with guards found Schoenlein at 6:02 a.m. hiding within an industrial service area, Gaede said.

Schoenlein was able to walk to the detention center infirmary where he was treated initially for several deep cuts before an ambulance took him to the Queen's Medical Center.

The last successful escape from the correctional center came in November when a detainee scaled a fence that runs along the border with Foremost Dairy. In that case, the escapee's jeans and boxer shorts were found hanging from the razor wire at the top of the fence. He was found a day later at his girlfriend's home a few blocks away.

Dispute leads to arrest

A 33-year-old Honolulu man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening stemming from a confrontation he had with a 60-year-old man last week.

Police said the younger came to the older man's home about 10 a.m. Friday asking to be paid for work he had done.

At some point during discussions between the two men, the younger one became enraged, took out two knives and threatened to kill the older man, police said.

They said the younger man eventually left the home, and the older man, who was not injured, reported the incident to police.

The suspected was located, identified and arrested yesterday, police said.

Man accused of smashing windshield

Police arrested a 28-year-old man about 5:15 p.m. yesterday at the Waimanalo Shopping Center after he allegedly smashed the windshield of his ex-girlfriend's car and assaulted her.

The woman, 28, told police she had been arguing with the man before the incident.

Police arrived and arrested the former boyfriend on suspicion of terroristic threatening and assault of a household member.
