Hawai'i teachers win national honors

Associated Press

Two Hawai'i teachers were honored today with the 2004 Presidential Awards for Excellence in math and science.

Stacie Kaichi, a math teacher at Salt Lake Elementary School, and Kelley Fitzgerald, a science teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy, are in Washington D.C. this week to receive the awards.

Kaichi and Fitzgerald are among 95 elementary and middle school teachers nationwide to earn the award.

Each teacher will receive a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

"These outstanding teachers show us what excellent teaching looks like," said Mark Saul, program director of elementary, secondary and informal education at the National Science Foundation. "We hope their example will stimulate the creativity of other teachers and help attract new recruits to the mathematics and science teaching profession."
