$75,000 damage in home fire

A fire heavily damaged a single-story home across from Sunset Beach yesterday.

The fire at 59-742 Kamehameha Highway was reported at 12:38 p.m. and the blaze damaged most of the interior of the home, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada. One man and two women live there, but no one was at home when the fire broke out, Tejada said. They were being helped by the Red Cross. Damage was estimated at $75,000.



HONOLULU

Captain fined for illegal fishing

The captain of the Honolulu-based fishing boat Pacific Star has been fined $45,000 for violating the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the Pacific Star was spotted by Canadian authorities actively fishing for squid about 75 miles inside Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone. The boat was later found to have more than 350 cases of squid aboard, and did not have a permit to fish in Canadian waters.

Under an agreement between the countries, NOAA Fisheries Service agents may investigate such violations in Canadian waters.

Robber hits Waipahu bank

CrimeStoppers and the Ho-nolulu Police Department are asking for help in identifying the man who robbed the Waipahu branch of American Savings Bank, at 94-060 Farrington Highway, yesterday.

Suspect
At about 10:30 a.m., the robber approached the teller, said he was armed and demanded money. He was last seen running mauka through the Waipahu Town Center parking lot.

The suspect was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet 6, 220 pounds, with heavy build, brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a navy blue baseball cap, a gray long-sleeved T-shirt, baggy faded denim jeans, work boots and carrying a black backpack.



KAUA'I

Visitor dies after near-drowning

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 64-year old visitor from California died Sunday after a near-drowning at Anahola Beach Saturday.

Police said the woman received CPR from bystanders and then police after being brought out of the water about 1 p.m. Saturday. She died the next day at Wilcox Hospital.

UH offers public forum

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa's academic deans and directors will present a deliberative forum entitled "Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom: Perspectives," at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the School of Architecture Auditorium.

The presentation will offer viewpoints on freedom of speech and academic freedom.

Guest panelists include Jeff Portnoy, attorney-at-law and partner, Cades Schutte; Fred Hemmings, state senator, minority leader and businessman; James Roumasset, professor of economics, College of Social Sciences, UH-Manoa; and Jon Van Dyke, professor of law, William S. Richardson School of Law, UH-Manoa.

School collecting cans, bottles

'Aina Haina Elementary School will be collecting HI5 recyclable cans and plastic bottles for a fund-raiser from 7:15 to 10:30 a.m. April 20 at the school campus, 801 W. Hind Drive.

Money raised from the drive will be used to help pay for the school's new weather station.
