POLICE BEAT
Smoke alarm saves family

Advertiser Staff

A smoke alarm is being credited with giving five members of a Mililani family adequate time to escape their burning home early this morning.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said seven fire units responded to the two-alarm fire on Makapipipi Street, which was reported at 3:23 a.m.

"The front half of the house was fully involved when firefighters got there," Tejada said. "The owner of the house told me the smoke alarm first alerted him that there was a problem and he was able to get all of the others out of the house."

At home when the fire broke out were the owner, a man in his 50s; his parents, who are in their 80s; the homeowner's daughter, in her 30s; and the owner's granddaughter who is in her early teens.

The fire was declared under control at 3:49 a.m. and there were no injuries, Tejada said.

Woman accused in stabbing

A 27-year-old 'Aiea woman was arrested yesterday morning after she allegedly stabbed her live-in boyfriend as he was preparing to leave for work.

The stabbing victim, 26, told police he had been arguing with the woman who stabbed him once inside their home about 8:30 a.m. and then a second time after he made his way outside.

Police described the two stab wounds as minor.

Police arrived and arrested the woman for attempted second-degree murder.

Theft suspect arrested

A 45-year-old man was arrested yesterday as a suspect in the break-in and theft of money from the French Wrench gas station early Monday morning.

Police said a gas station employee saw a man crawling out of a broken window at the station about 12:36 a.m. Monday. A check of the station's office area showed its safe had been broken into and money taken from it.

At 8:34 p.m. yesterday, a gas station employee saw the suspect in the area and called police who caught up with the man and arrested him for suspicion of first-degree burglary.

Attack suspect arrested

Police yesterday arrested a 24-year-old homeless man as a suspect in the Feb. 5 attack upon a 43-year-old Kalihi woman at a city bus stop in Kalihi.

Police said the woman was waiting for a bus at about 4:50 a.m. when a stranger approached her, struck her in the face without warning and took her purse as she fell to the ground.

Police said they subsequently developed information that led to the man's arrest yesterday for suspicion of second-degree robbery.

While the man was being booked on the robbery charge, a glass pipe containing crystal methamphetamine was found in his pants pocket, police said, leading to leading to additional arrests for suspicion of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
