Inmate attempts second escape, officials say

Advertiser Staff

An O'ahu Community Correctional Center inmate who was badly injured by razor wire during an early morning escape attempt Tuesday, tried again, unsuccessfully, to escape from the Queen's Medical Center Tuesday night where he was taken to be treated.

Greg Schoenlein, 43, assaulted an adult correctional officer at approximately 9:45 p.m. inside his room at the medical center, a news release from the Department of Public Safety said.

The officer pushed the inmate into the hallway where three civilians standing nearby assisted in restraining the inmate while the officer applied handcuffs, the release said.

Schoenlein was then secured to his hospital bed. Schoenlein is considered a maximum security risk. Extra precautions have been added, which include an additional officer and extra security from the Queen's Medical Center Security staff, the release said.

No one was injured during the altercation. Schoenlein is expected to stay in the hospital for at least one more day.

He now faces assault and attempted escape charges.
