ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Sprout' soundtrack splashy

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Yesterday's CD release — which you may have missed — was the quirky mix-tape of a soundtrack for the surf flick "Sprout." Tracks include the '60s jazzy lounge swing of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments," the astro-lounge torch of vocalist Hope Sandoval's "On The Low," and The Shins' summer-kicky "When I Goose Step." Jack Johnson plays on the Sprout House Band's instrumentals "Butter Nut" and "Spanish Flowers." On Record Collection/Brushfire Records.

In a material world

How to keep teens and tweens from becoming overly materialistic? Some tips from Parents magazine:

  • Avoid overindulging your child. Save special gifts for special occasions.
  • Skip the mall. Discourage recreational shopping.
  • Teach kids to live on a budget. Make a list of your child's monthly expenditures and decide what you will cover.
  • Set an example. If you buy something to cheer yourself up after a bad day, your child may do the same.

FINAL WORD

Carmen Electra | in the April issue of In Style (pictured with husband Dave Navarro):

"I've always had a little sadness in my heart, and I used to compensate for that by partying and having lots of people around me. Now I'm at a point in my life where going to a club doesn't mean anything. I want substance. When I met Dave, I saw the potential. I knew he was someone I wanted to get my life together for."
