Hawai'i golfers earn all-West Coast honors

 •  Broadus will sign with BYU

Two women golfers from Hawai'i earned all-conference honors after finishing in the top six at the West Coast Conference Championships yesterday at the Saddle Creek Golf Course in Copperopolis, Calif.

Pepperdine senior Rachel Kyono, a 2002 Kaua'i graduate, tied for third after shooting 10-over-par 77-74-75—226 and San Francisco senior Mariko Joan Shimozaki, a 2001 Seabury Hall graduate, finished sixth after shooting 76-75-77—228.

Gonzaga freshman Sarah Sheffield (Kea'au) finished 22nd with 79-91-88—258.

On the men's side, San Francisco freshman Moses Kahalekulu (Baldwin) shot 74-75-79—228 to tie for 17th.

Loyola Marymount senior Chaz Inouye (St. Anthony 2002) tied for 31st after shooting 78-79-79—236, and Gonzaga freshman Reyn Tanaka (Mid-Pacific 2004) shot 79-79-80—238 and placed 34th.

More Golf

• Lewis & Clark senior Mari Kotake (Punahou of Honolulu) shot 92-86—178 to tie for third at the Pacific Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Forest Hills Golf Course in Cornelius.

Men's Volleyball

• Two former Hawai'i high school volleyball players are returning home to complete their collegiate careers at Pacific against the University of Hawai'i Friday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Senior opposite Brian Zodrow (Saint Louis '01) is averaging a team-high 4.69 kills per game with a .277 hitting percentage, 1.22 digs per game and 0.57 blocks per game.

Senior outside hitter Bryson Metz (Kamehameha '01 of 'Aiea) is averaging 2.00 kills per game with a .217 hitting percentage, 1.30 digs and 0.61 blocks per game.

The Tigers lost to Stanford Friday, and were mathematically eliminated from postseason play for the second consecutive season as they dropped to 12-16 overall and 6-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Baseball

• Pepperdine senior pitcher Kea Kometani (Punahou '01 of Honolulu) was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Month for March after pitching two complete games in four starts to earn four straight victories, which tied for second in the WCC.

He was third in the conference with a 1.04 ERA in 34á innings pitched. He allowed 35 hits and four earned runs, while striking out 26 and holding opponents to a .259 batting average.

Kometani worked at least eight innings in all four starts and posted wins over No. 5 South Carolina and No. 30 Winthrop. Against the Gamecocks, he worked 8á innings, scattered 11 hits, allowed two earned runs, did not walk a batter, struck out a career-high 10 batters, and was named WCC/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 22.

• Sacramento State junior outfielder Jim Strombach (Moanalua '02 of 'Aiea) batted .313 with five hits, three RBIs, three runs and one double in a four-game series with Hawai'i-Hilo, which the Hornets captured, 3-1.

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) sophomore Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) struck out 10 in eight innings, allowing one run on four hits Saturday in a 6-1 win over Gavilan.

Balatico also had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.

An RBI single by Balatico in the fifth inning tied the score at 1, and Jake Oketani (Kaua'i) singled to put Hartnell up 2-1.

A two-out, two-run double by freshman catcher Jowen Murray-Thornton (Saint Louis '04) stretched the lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning.

Monday, Balatico hit a grand slam and had six RBIs in a 13-5 win over Monterey Peninsula College.

• Chicago State freshman Chris Freshour (Mid-Pacific of Honolulu) finished with five strikeouts and a three-hitter in his first complete game (seven innings) and first win (1-6) as Chicago State beat Valparaiso, 13-1, Saturday.

Freshman catcher Aaron "Pono" Moises (Saint Louis of Mililani) had a single and a run, sophomore shortstop Jonathan Sakurai ('Aiea '03) and freshman left fielder Chris Goya (Mid-Pacific '04 of Kane'ohe) both went 2 for 2 with three runs for Chicago State. Sakurai's hits included two doubles, and Goya had two RBIs.

Chicago State swept the doubleheader, winning the first game 5-3.

• Yakima (Wash.) Valley Community College shortstop Nick Sargent (Kalaheo '02) batted 4 for 8 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs in a doubleheader against Blue Mountain Community College Saturday. Yakima won the first game, 12-8, and lost the second, 13-8.

• Diablo Valley (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) College freshman first baseman Kepa Wong ('Aiea '04) and freshman second baseman Johnny Gentry (Saint Louis '04) helped the team pick up three wins.

Wong batted 2 for 5 and drove in the winning run in a 2-1, 10-inning win over Napa Valley March 31.

Gentry batted 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs, and Wong went 2 for 3 with two runs in a 14-5 win over Los Mendanos April 1.

Wong hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to break up a no-hitter and batted 2 for 4 in a 6-3 win over Napa Valley April 2.

Wong went 3 for 5, including a grand slam, in a 12-7 loss to Cosumnes River on April 7.

Women's Wrestling

• Pacific sophomore Kapua Torres (Kahuku) won the junior national title at the Body Bar Women's Wrestling Nationals last weekend in El Cajon, Calif.

Torres, who won the Women's Collegiate Nationals last month at 112.25 pounds, also placed second in the university division bracket.

The win in the junior bracket qualifies Torres to compete in July's U.S. World Team Trials.

Torres defeated Debbie Sakai (Team Hawaii, Mililani '03), 4-1, 3-3, in pool round 3, and Sadie Kaneda (Missouri Valley, Roosevelt), 5-0, 4-4, in pool round 4.

Men's Tennis

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) sophomore Ashten Kawabe ('Aiea) defeated Williamette's Jeff Garrison, 6-4, 10-5 (10-8), at No. 2 singles in a 5-2 loss Saturday.

Pacific sophomore Justin Silva (Kapa'a) lost to Jeff Hancock, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3; Pacific sophomore Bobby Nimi (Hawai'i Baptist) lost to Eric McMillan, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4; and Willamette senior Garrett Nakamatsu (Iolani) defeated sophomore Kyle Tomita (Hawai'i Baptist), 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5.

In another match played that day, Linfield (McMinnville, Ore.) beat Pacific, 5-0, as sophomore Jon Roberts (Hawai'i Prep of Kamuela) beat Kawabe, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

Silva, Nimi and Tomita all lost their matches.
