Iolani downs Maryknoll in ILH, 43-31

 •  Basketball: Iolani's Pape commits to Colorado school
 •  Baseball: Kramer powers Mid-Pacific, 8-3
 •  Cross Country: Char resigns as Iolani girls coach

The Iolani School girls basketball team was one of the state's youngest last year, with only one senior, and this season the Raiders are even younger.

But senior-less Iolani's youth has not prevented the Raiders from staying atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings, after a 43-31 victory over Maryknoll last night at McCabe Gym.

Iolani improved to 4-0 in the ILH, tied for first place with Punahou. The teams will meet Friday at 8 p.m. at Punahou. Maryknoll fell to 2-2.

"I told our girls, 'You're young, but you're not inexperienced,' " Raiders coach Glenn Takara said. "Our expectations are higher."

Still, as could be expected from a youthful team, Iolani had its ups and downs last night. The Raiders jumped to a 12-3 lead in the first period, only to fall behind 20-17 by halftime.

Iolani then outscored the Spartans, 15-1, in the third quarter and maintained the lead in the fourth to seal the victory.

"We came out hard, but give Maryknoll credit because they came right back," said Raiders junior forward Alana Wall, who scored a game-high 10 points. "But we knew if we kept them down on defense in the third quarter, we'd have a good chance of winning."

The Spartans scored the first point of the second half, on Tammie Andres' free throw, but were shut out for the final 6:12 of the period. Meanwhile, Iolani got baskets from five different players in scoring 15 unanswered points.

For the game, all 11 Raiders contributed with either points, rebounds or steals.

"We used everybody tonight, and the one thing we stressed was defense," Takara said. "Everybody did come to play."

Maryknoll coach Bob Samson said fatigue may have played a factor in his team's second-half struggles.

"If you look at Iolani, even their post players can run," Samson said. "They're in great shape."
