Voyager benefit features mayor

Mayor Mufi Hannemann will speak on "More Than Just Business: Revitalizing Honolulu from Chinatown to Waikiki" at Voyager Charter School's annual fund-raising brunch.

The brunch takes place at John Dominis restaurant from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30. Kirk Matthews will be master of ceremonies; Vaihi will provide entertainment.

Tickets are $100 per plate, with tables available for $1,000 to $10,000. All proceeds will go to Voyager, which is located in Kaka'ako.

Teacher here wins first round

Maryknoll High School teacher Lance Alexander Suzuki has been named one of five first-round winners in the 2005 NASDAQ National Teaching Awards Competition.

Along with the award, Suzuki will receive $10,000. The national winner, who will be announced on Monday, will receive an additional $15,000.

The awards are given to middle or high school teachers for excellence and innovation in incorporating economic education into any subject area.

Suzuki has his students take on the role of federal policy-makers who develop an economically sound budget.



Parker School tourney May 2

Parker School on the Big Island is accepting registration for its Scholarship Golf Tournament through tomorrow.

The event is set for May 2. Last year's tournament raised $20,000 for scholarships.

The school is also hosting the Parker School Community Lu'au at 5 p.m. April 22. Advance tickets are $10 for children under 12, $15 for adults and $50 per family (two adults and up to four children). At the door, tickets will be $15, $20 and $60. Tickets can be purchased at the business office at the Parker School's campus on Lindsey Road.



Magazine picks overall winners

Jomel Sumira of Moanalua High School and Clarence Sesepasara of Nanakuli High School have been named the Overall Female and Overall Male, respectively, in Sassy and G Magazine's selections for the 25 Most Intriguing High School Seniors for 2005.

Each received a $1,000 cash scholarship from the Honolulu City and County Employees Federal Credit Union, $2,000 in scholarships to Hawai'i Pacific University and other prizes from program sponsors.

The other 23 seniors also received a prize package and a $1,000 scholarship to HPU.

The Sassy and G Magazine issue containing information about all 25 seniors has been distributed to intermediate and high schools on O'ahu.

Winners are considered to be positive role models in the community, excellent in a specific area, with at least a C average.



Poets' readings set for Saturday

Tinfish poets will give a free reading at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hawai'i State Library courtyard.

Participating poets will be Susan Schultz, editor of Tinfish Press; Sherman Souther, a retired plastic surgeon; Robert Sullivan, a Maori of the Nga Puhi Tribe who has won several national New Zealand book awards; Caroline Sinavaiana-Gabbard, an instructor of Oceanic literatures at the University of Hawai'iiManoa; and author Anne Kennedy.
