Kalani beats Roosevelt in OIA East baseball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Shutting out the Roosevelt High School baseball team is almost as rare as turning a triple play, but Kalani pulled off both feats yesterday at refurbished Stevenson Middle School field.

The Falcons blanked the Rough Riders, 3-0, to improve to 5-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division. Roosevelt fell to 6-1.

Kalani's triple play, which came in the bottom of the fifth inning, was crucial because the Rough Riders — trailing 2-0 at the time — had runners on first and second with their cleanup hitter, Nick Wong, at bat. Wong drilled a line drive straight at shortstop Marcus Fujita, who caught it and threw to second baseman Jordan Sumida, who doubled off the runner leaving the bag and relayed to Reid Matsumura at first base, where the runner also had strayed too far.

"I remember seeing one when we were coaching softball, but that might be the first triple play I've seen (live) in baseball," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said. "That was big because Roosevelt had good momentum going, and we turned it all around with one crack of the bat. Our defense is finally making plays."

The Falcons made several key plays in the first four innings, helping strand seven Rough Riders. Roosevelt left the bases loaded in the first inning, then stranded two in the third when Rick Yoshikane's line drive was caught in right field.

"We had opportunities, but Kalani played good defense, especially when we got guys on base," Rough Riders coach Kerry Higa said. "We hit the ball, but it was right at guys."

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Fujita led off with a walk, advanced to second and third on singles and scored on an error. They made it 2-0 in the fifth when Preston Pires hit a high two-out single off the right-field fence to score Trevor Teraoka from first.

Kalani then went up 3-0 in the sixth after Ridge Carpenter walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice, to third on a single and scored on an errant backdoor pickoff attempt.
