The Briefs are back

Come on, you know the tunes! The magic of "Outer Space Doesn't Care About You" done live. The carefree fun of "Kill All The Hippies." That golden prom fave "Love and Ulcers." The Briefs are back in town, boy-o! The good folks at Unity Crayons have brought in the hard-core punkers for two shows: tonight at Pink Cadillac and tomorrow at Anna Bannana's. Opening tonight are The Hell Caminos, My Ex Is Dead and Sunday Silence; tomorrow: The 86 List, Temporary Lovers and Laissez Faire.

All that's jazz at Mamiya

If you're in the mood for jazz, you won't want to miss "An Evening of Jazz" featuring Noel Okimoto, above, and 'ohana. Local jazz quartet The Out Takes joins in the jam with its mix of saxophone, guitar, bass and drums. 'Ukulele master Ohta-san opens. Pupu and wine will be served 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the courtyard.

DJ Rap spins

DJ Rap is queen of the jungle beats. Born Charissa Saverio and known for her hot and heavy drum-n-bass stylings, she has recently been making her way onto the house scene. Besides being a top-rated DJ, the Londoner's rap sheet includes being a label owner, producer and recording artist.

What's new this spring

It's not too early to shop for Mother's Day — or Father's Day — so check out the gifts and goodies at the 30th annual Spring New Products Show. The weekend of shopping and entertainment includes food, electronics, fashion, home accessories, and health, beauty and automotive products. Saturday features the third annual Hawaii's Strongest Teen Man competition, while Sunday features the 14th annual Hawaii's Strongest Man contest. Other festivities include Surf into Summer fashion shows, Hawai'i-made products and food fair, a Kona CD release party, inflatable rides, bungee and rock climbing.

Dark 'Doctor Faustus'

Lizard Loft presents a dark and modern take on the 17th-century play "Doctor Faustus." Conflicts between good and evil are examined when German scholar Faustus decides to sell his soul to a devil in exchange for magical powers. Lily Brennick will be Faust and KT Brauer is Mephistopheles in a gender twist on the original. Andrew Valentine directs.

Kailua throws a party

The heart of Kailua comes alive at the 13th annual I Love Kailua Town Party. Kailua Road will be bursting with activity during the daylong event, which includes crafts from Windward artisans, a plant sale, keiki activities, an art walk, community information booths and free health screenings. The yummy Taste of Kailua is back, with dishes from area restaurants. Entertainment will be by Puamana, Coconut Joe, JP Smoketrain and Friends, Pattye's Hula Studio and Oomooeemoo. The annual fund-raiser bash is presented by the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle.

Memory lane is beckoning

Hop on over for a '50s and '60s harmony extravaganza at the Doowop concert, with three acts. Catch some blue-eyed soul with Detroit-based ensemble The Reflections, best known for "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet." The four members of The Coasters turn back time with "Down in Mexico" and other hits. Rounding out the bill is The Capris of New York City, whose hits include "There's a Moon Out Tonight" and "Morse Code of Love."

Two decades of T-Shirt Theatre

T-Shirt Theatre in Kalihi is celebrating its 20th year with a show titled "Kalihi Caravan: 20: Twenty." All alumni and the public are invited to attend. The mission of T-Shirt Theatre is to help youngsters master skills for adult life as they sing, dance and run the backstage and front of the house.

Two-day celebration at Iolani School

Iolani School will be twinkling with activity at its annual family fair, themed "Starstruck in Hollywood." The two-day affair has something for everyone, with a Chic Boutique, Bargain Boutique Body and Soul, games, food, quilts, specialties marketplace, cooking demonstrations and silent auction. Entertainment is provided by Kupono Kane, Maunalua, Round & Round, Azure McCall with Bruce Hamada and Jim Howard, Gabe Baltazar and Friends, Na Palapalai, and Weldon Kekauoha with Tapa Groove. Sunset at Iolani features movies at 7 p.m. on the football field; tonight's feature is "Shrek 2," and Saturday's film is "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."

Suds on a shilling

Drown those tax sorrows at the Hops and Grinds beer-tasting series, which is themed "Shilling Beer Night" this month. Beers will be grouped based on the old Scottish beer tax system, which taxed beers according to alcohol levels and original density. The event offers 15 beers for sampling, including Aventinus, Henry Weinhard's Blue Boar Ale, Samuel Smith's Pale Ale and Traquair Jacobite Ale. The admission fee also includes a pupu buffet.

Calling college arts lovers

The Contemporary Museum offers Nara College Day and 'Zine Fair in conjunction with its current exhibit, "Yoshitomo Nara: Nothing Ever Happens," which continues through May 29. The event will include a walkthrough of the exhibit with curator Michael Rooks and local 'zine writers and publishers. Above is a sample of Nara's pop artistry, a pencil and colored pencil work on paper from 2002.
