FESTIVAL: April 22

Celebrate diversity at Hawai'i Pacific University's 21st annual Intercultural Day featuring exhibits, a parade, ethnic food and traditional dance and music. Countries represented include Japan, the Philippines, Italy, Sweden, Turkey, Brazil, Norway, Korea, Singapore, Kenya, Thailand, Botswana, Samoa, Denmark, France and Malaysia. Free.

CLUBS: April 22

Freshen up for Friday night and celebrate Earth Day at Indigo when the weekly Get Fresh! night teams up with KTUH for a fund-raiser that benefits the university radio station and Earth Day Network. KTUH DJs in the mix include Loriel, Kavet the Catalyst, Sifu "Jive" Walker, joan9, G-Spot, Nocturna and Ross Jackson. Admission is $7 at the door or $5 with student ID; for 21 and older.

United Self-Help of Hawaii presents "Truly Dually," left, an original musical about homelessness and mental illness. Locally written by Michael Ullman, the play is an entertaining but serious portrayal of the humanity of individuals who are homeless. The cast includes, from left, TJ Tario, Dion Donahue and Matthew Pennaz. Roslyn Catracchia composes and directs. Admission is free; donations welcome.

Kennedy Theatre's 2004-05 Late Night Series wraps up with the play "Arabian Night." Written by German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig and translated into English by David Tushingham, this surreal drama focuses on an apartment building's tenants and landlord, as illusion and reality intertwine. UH-Manoa graduate student Peter Ruocco directs. Tickets are $8 general, $7 seniors, military, non-UH-Manoa students and UH faculty/staff, and $3 UH-Manoa students; for mature audiences.

CONCERT: May 8

Grammy award-winning jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall lights up the night with the final concert of her current world tour. The renowned musician performs with the Honolulu Symphony Pops; Matt Catingub conducts. Tickets: $38 lawn, $78 second terrace reserved, $93 first terrace reserved and $128 pool area table seats. CONCERT: April 23

Pull the cord and get off the bus because the next stop is ska-ville. The boys of Long Beach Shortbus, above, are back for more jams, along with Justin Black, Missing Dave and Amplified. Featuring former members of Sublime and the Long Beach Dub All-stars, this concert kicks off the group's West Coast tour. Tickets: $16 advance and $20 at the door; for 21 and older. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Uncover the enchanting mysteries of "The Secret Garden," presented by Army Community Theatre. Based on the classic children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this award-winning Broadway musical tells the story of a young orphan who revives a long-hidden garden and in turn, her relatives, too. Laurence Paxton is Archibald Craven, TX Tario is Colin Craven and Channing Weir plays Mary Lennox. Glenn Cannon directs. Tickets are $14 and $17 general, and $8 and $10 children 12 and younger.

FESTIVAL: May 12-14

It's getting hot in here because it's time for the Polynesian Cultural Center's 13th annual World Fireknife Competition, left. More than 40 competitors turn up the heat at Hale Ohana with the preliminaries, Junior World Fireknife Competition and adult semifinals. The adult finals and crowning take place in the Pacific Theater, with the contestants showing their skills during the intermissions of the "Horizon" night show. Kama'aina admission to the Hale Ohana shows are $8 general and $6 ages 5-11. Tickets to the finals are $36 general and $25 children, which includes admission to the "Horizon" night show. Annual Pass holders get in free with a reservation.

FESTIVAL: May 14

The Filipino Community Center presents a fun-filled day of culture with the 13th annual Filipino Fiesta and Parade, left. The parade travels from Fort DeRussy down Kalakaua Avenue to end at Kapi'olani Park for the festival. There the celebration includes Filipino food, arts and crafts, local and international entertainment, a health fair and Regional Village. Admission is free.

DJ Mark Farina, above, is letting loose and embarking on his first Mushroom Jazz tour in three years. The whirlwind worldwide tour makes two stops in the Islands for funky hip-hop grooves and soulful jazzy tunes. DJs G-Spot, Daniel J, IKON and Sovern-T also get in the mix. Tickets are $15 limited pre-sale, $20 after; for 18 and older.

BUZZING ABOUT

Rick Shea returns

The Rick Shea Band is heading for O'ahu for a couple of gigs next month. Shea, whose music is a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll, was last here in 2003 — in February with the Hawaiian Blues Mango Band and Bla Pahinui, then in November with Dave Alvin. He and his band are scheduled to perform at Anna Bannana's May 20 and at the Pikake Pavilion, Waimea Valley Audubon Center, May 21. Details to come.

Fair weather

Mark your calendars: The 50th State Fair takes place May 26-June 19 at Aloha Stadium. Hours are 6 p.m.-midnight Fridays; noon-midnight Saturdays and Sundays; 6 p.m.-midnight May 26 and June 9; noon-midnight May 30. Admission is $3 general, $2 for those age 4-11, free for keiki 3 and younger.

Getting into the Rhythm

"Beyond Nationalities: Dancing to the Rhythm of Solidarity" is the theme of this year's East-West Fest, from 1 to 6 p.m. April 24 at the East-West Center's Hawai'i Imin International Conference Center. The celebration includes cultural performances, food, interactive exhibits, games and more. You can donate to the Indian Ocean tsunami-relief fund, too. Admission is free.
