MAUI

Ha'iku facility forced to close

HA'IKU, Maui — Corrosion and high winds have forced county officials to close the Ha'iku Field House.

Parents and officials at nearby Ha'iku Elementary School alerted the parks department that several metal roofing panels that protect outdoor volleyball and basketball courts had become loose.

The county hired a welding company to remove loose materials that could pose a safety hazard. On further inspection, officials noticed the problem was greater than a few loose panels, according to deputy parks director John Buck.

Girders that support the 12-year-old structure are rusted out and will have to be replaced before the new panels can be installed, he said, and the condition of the rest of the field house will have to be reviewed.

Buck said the facility will remain closed while the county plans renovations to the structure and obtains funding.
