Kimo's longboard meet set for Maui

About 65 surfers are expected to compete in the 28th annual Kimo's Longboard Contest at Maui's Mala Wharf.

The contest's holding period is from Wednesday through Aug. 20.

Surfers will compete in 20-minute heats in the double-elimination amateur contest.

Surfboards are required to be 9 to 11 feet, single fin with no surf leashes. A panel of five judges will evaluate the competitors on a combination of nostalgic and progressive longboarding moves.

Entry fees are $25 (pre-entry) and $30 (day-of beach entry). Beach entries are not guaranteed. To receive an application or for more information, call (808) 205-9500.



Hanalei running event celebrates 25th year

Hanalei Canoe Club's 25th annual Ha'ena to Hanalei 8-mile run on Kaua'i is scheduled for June 4 and will include several activities.

• The 8-mile walk begins at 6 a.m. and the 8-mile run will begin at 7 a.m. at Ke'e Beach.

• A 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) run has been added this year and it will begin and end at Hanalei Pier.

• A 1-mile fun run for kids will also begin and end at the pier.

After the races, registered participants will enjoy a free pancake breakfast and others may purchase their breakfast for $5.

Basketball shootout tomorrow at club

The second annual Saab March Madness Basketball Shootout is tomorrow at the Honolulu Club.

There will be competitions in free throws, 3-pointers, climb-the-ladder, half-court shots and hot-shots. Each category is open to the public, and will have a prize.
